Architecture can be a catalyst for transformation at all scales. The Architecture Symposium: Beyond the Building presents a curated selection of contemporary Australian architects whose public projects have an impact that is beyond the built form itself. In these buildings, form and use, aesthetics and technology, concept and program, ethics and immediacy, private need and public good often meet head-on. Discussion will highlight works that have synthesized these often-conflicting factors, extending the brief to unlock remarkable results that have a ripple effect on the building’s context and its community.

Making versus Taking Architects have a collective ethical responsibility for the public good and our critical thinking skills are needed now more than ever to address the challenges of the built environment. Our role is to contribute to the collective bettering of the world through the wide-ranging entry point of architecture – from the careful design of shelter and the use of new technologies to minimize materials, to building with waste and considering the unbuilt.

Raffaello Rosselli’s practice redefines and reimagines materials. His design process is based on material experimentation, which influences the design practice at all scales – from small pavilions to large-scale developments. Previous projects have employed plastic bales, rusted steel sheeting, old roof tiles and quarry stone.
Rosselli received the 2021 Robert Woodward Award for Small Project Architecture in the NSW Architecture Awards for the Plastic Palace, a temporary pavilion in Albury built from 20 tonnes of recycled plastic waste.
Other Architects is an architectural practice that sees the design of buildings as a means rather than an end. Ongoing Other Architects research projects include increasing suburban density by stealth, making architecture from everyday objects, and pursuing a return to the earth via natural burial.
Peter uses design to better understand the world around him. Insatiably curious, he sees each project as a chance to dive into something new, be it place, culture, material or experience. He believes architecture is as much art and poetics as it is engineering or construction, and is inspired to create spaces that evoke an emotional response. For him, architecture is best practiced with a light-hearted, playful and open mindset.
Keith joined Cumulus as director in 2015 and now runs Cumulus Studio’s Melbourne office. His practice has mainly focussed on bespoke architectural projects in the public and institutional sectors, including Melbourne Art Centre’s Protagonist.
Co-CEO, Strategic Champion Digital Innovation and Robotics, BVN
Ninotschka Titchkosky is co-CEO and Strategic Champion of Digital Innovation and Robotics at BVN. She is passionate about the role architects play in shaping our interactions, communities and cities and continually seeks to effect change through projects. She is leading BVN’s research into robotics.
Abbie Galvin is the NSW Government Architect. Prior to this appointment, she worked for 30 years in architectural practice on projects across a range of sectors that have been highly awarded, published and recognized internationally for bringing fresh approaches to common project types.
Abbie is passionate about the public domain, and the ability of architecture and our built environment to positively affect human behaviour, the way people interact, and the manner in which institutions and organizations operate.
William Smart is the founder and creative director of Smart Design Studio, which takes a holistic approach, combining architectural and interior design with a passionate attention to detail and an ethos of “architecture from the inside out.” Over the past 23 years, Smart Design Studio has delivered a wide range of projects, from large-scale masterplans, cultural buildings, offices and workplaces to private houses and product design.
Smart Design Studio’s buildings have received critical acclaim, with the studio receiving more than 40 international and national awards for architecture, urban design and interior design. William was also the recipient of the People’s Choice Award (The Luminary) at the 2017 Inde Awards. He has taught and lectured across Australia, published written work and is an active participant in charity organizations.
