The Architecture Symposium: Readymade
Retrofit, re-use and replicable strategies for housing. Curated by Jennie Officer and Nigel Bertram.
A senior lecturer in architecture at University of South Australia, Dr Damian Madigan coined the term ‘Bluefield Housing’ to describe established suburbs and the way they can support low-rise urban infill through adaptive reuse and additions. Currently working with the South Australian State Government to make his co-location model a new form of permitted infill development, his book ‘Bluefield Housing as Alternative Infill for the Suburbs’ (Routledge, 2024) has been described as “design research at its best.”
Individually and collaboratively, Damian has won design competition awards, shortlistings, and commendations from the City of Los Angeles, NSW State Government, the City of Sydney, Architecture Australia, and the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, Damian is a member of the South Australian State Government’s Design Review Panel and the AACA’s National Architecture Program Accreditation Standing Panel, and is a non-executive director and deputy chair of the board of The Cottage Homes Incorporated.
