Beyond the Classroom: Designing a Neighbourhood Asset
Kian Yam is a co-founder of the architectural practice MLKK Studio, based in Hong Kong. Specializing in people-oriented design, Kian was one of the key leaders and architects for the social design project Build a Music School in Myanmar. The project is a rural school development and community activation program serving ethnic minorities in Myanmar’s Eastern Shan State, aiming to alleviate social issues arising from poverty.
Kian’s recent projects include community centers for the coastal city of Mombasa in Kenya and social-environmental architectural activations in Hong Kong. Her studio’s work has been recognized by various global design awards, including the World Architecture Festival. Kian is a registered architect, a certified designer of the Passivhaus Design Institute (PHI), and an alumna of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
