David Welsh and Chris Major have had a practice together for over 20 years. They describe their practice as modern-ish. They consider their work with a broad modernist sensibility, unconstrained by any dogma of material, functionality or style, preferring to respond, rather than react to programme and context, and where possible look to introduce an element of the unexpected.
With a team of 12, they have managed to design a diverse range of buildings including childcare centres, cemetery buildings, community centres and libraries, pubs and restaurants, animal rehoming centres and of course, housing.
They’ve recently designed and built a house for themselves in South West Rocks, halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. It's a bit of an experiment. It’s on Airbnb, partly so the house can help pay for itself, and partly so that as many people as possible can experience the experiment themselves.
