The Architecture Symposium: Acts of Generosity
Expanding the boundaries of civic design. Curated by Amy Muir and Rachel Neeson.
Challis Smedley is a sole practitioner based in Sydney with over twenty-five years of experience in combining architecture, adaptive re-use and heritage conservation work with a masters in heritage conservation (United Kingdom, 1997). Challis works closely with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects on a project-by-project basis and runs her own solo practice, primarily working with adaptive re-use and upgrades for existing residential buildings. Her focus is on bringing new layers of contemporary function and spatial quality to existing sites, while recognizing and conserving the inherent significance of each place. This approach is inherently sustainable and contributes to a greater movement that centres on slowing the pace of greenfield redevelopment in the construction sector. Challis was intimately involved with the restoration and conservation of the Bondi Pavilion from conception to completion as a senior member of the Tonkin Zulaikha Greer team.
