First and Last is a speaker series that invites notable designers and architects to reflect on one of their earliest projects in their career and contrast it with a most recent work.
Through candid presentations and conversations, the session explores how creative practices evolve over time, what remains constant, and how the design landscape has shifted. It’s a chance to hear personal insights into a career in practice, how to achieve longevity in the design industry, and lessons along the way. Join us as we hear stories from behind the work – from humble beginnings to current-day milestones.

Hamish Guthrie, co-director of Hecker Guthrie, will speak about George Street Residence, one of the first houses he completed after leaving a large practice. In contrast, Hamish will also share his experience working on the recent StandardX, a 125-room hotel in Melbourne’s Fitzroy.

Katherine Ashe, co-director of Boorloo/Perth-based architecture studio Vittino Ashe, will share insights on MmB, a neighbour’s house that seeded a lasting friendship and formed the beginnings of Vittino Ashe. Katherine will also reflect on her most recent residential project, titled Eton.
