Program Info
Join us for a conversation that celebrates the renewal, rather than the replacement, of our cities’ existing housing.
In this edition of Our Houses, two architects and their clients will share behind-the-scenes stories from two clever adaptations to houses from the 1970s. How can we better appreciate this era of often-overlooked suburban housing? What lessons of revival and rehabilitation can we learn from projects such as these?

Presented by
Matthew Eagle, Director, ME
Libby Brady, Client
Architect Matthew Eagle and client Libby will share their experiences of recoding a soundly built but unassuming 1970s project home on the Gold Coast. An intelligent process of extraction and attitude of repair has pushed back against the raze-and-rebuild mindset that proliferates in the region.
Smith House
Presented by
Jessie Fowler, Founding Director, Fowler and Ward Architects
Liz Ickiewicz, Client
Architect Jessie Fowler and client Liz will reflect on the restrained yet joyful revival of a brown-brick home in suburban Melbourne. Modest interventions and a shared willingness to celebrate the seventies spirit has resulted in a delightful home that embraces the “small but mighty” mantra.
